The fellows arrived!

Nermeen Shweiki · Mar 9, 2022 · Leave a Comment

The first Fellows arrive today.  Claudia, from Mexico, and Sofia from Brazil had the longest flights so we had the house ready for them a day early so they have a chance to get on “Israel time”.  Anna comes tomorrow.  Vibha had to delay her trip for medical reasons – she arrives on Friday.

The house in Musrara is ready.  Clean as a whistle. Beds beautifully made, fresh towels, a full frig. I’m bringing flowers and fresh bourekas this afternoon.  They are so lucky to be able to stay in this incredible home – from 1905.  Stone.  SO much light.  A lovely enclosed garden. (a beautiful place to stay while in quarantine for 24 hours.)  And they’ll have a “virtual tour” of Jerusalem via Mekudeshet while they’re home.

Our two artists, Anna and Claudia, are enjoying their
first day in Jerusalem, with our program manager, Elana.

The house is within a few minutes walk from East Jerusalem, the Old City, Mea Shearim, and the City Center (and a fabulous music venue called Ha Maskekah) and the light rail and multiple bus lines are down the block when they want to go further.

Thursday is when orientation officially begins.  Or as I like to call it “disorientation week.”  They will have so many views from vastly different expert perspectives – Jerusalem far and near, east and west.  Our Host Organization leaders are each taking them on tours of their own favorite places in Jerusalem – which is really a city of neighborhoods.  More on that once we begin.

I’m looking out the window from where I’m staying.  It is a beautiful morning. I should be pinching myself that I am here and this program is happening but in fact this all feels very “normal.”  Like it was supposed to happen and now it is finally about to begin.  I am so grateful to so many people for making it possible.  The immediate circle includes Ruth Cummings, our incredibly thorough and organized Program Manager, Elana Ben Haim, our wonderful Social Media/translator Nermeen Shweiki, Maya Halevy at Bloomfield Science, Matan Israeli at Muslala, Melhem Bader at Ibdaa, Elad Schechter at Catamon, and James Snyder and Ruth Diskin at the Jerusalem Foundation, Idana Goldberg at the Berrie Foundation and so many generous contributors.  Todah Rabbah.  Shukhran.

15 day count-down to landing

It has been a whirlwind few weeks as we prepare for the arrival of our Jerusalem International Fellows. They will arrive in Jerusalem on March 8 from Brazil, India, Mexico and the U.S. We have found a beautiful house for them in Musrara, in a fascinating neighborhood on the seam between East and West Jerusalem.

Our fantastic Host Organizations: L-R: Maya Halevy (Bloomfield Science Museum), Elise Bernhardt, Matan Israeli (Muslala), Melhem Bader (Ibdaa School of the Arts), Elad Schechter (c.a.t.a.m.o.n Dance Group)

Orientation week is just about finalized, thanks to the advice of our Host Organization leaders, James Snyder and our fantastic Program Manager Elana Ben-Haim. The Fellows’ days will be packed with visits to a plentiful variety of places, representing a wide spectrum of perspectives, led by extraordinary guides. We will be posting photos and videos and writing here on the blog. Thanks to our wonderful Social Media Manager Nermeen Shweiki, we will also be on Instagram@jerusaleminternationalfellows.  Please FOLLOW US!!

In the middle of Orientation week – Sunday, March 13th at 7 pm  we will hold our Launch/Meet the Fellows event at the beautiful new cultural space FEEL BEIT in Abu Tor.  If you happen to be in Israel at that time PLEASE join us.  You can RSVP here.

Our deep thanks to the Schusterman Family Foundation for finishing funds, helping us to insure that every element of the Residency is taken care of.

Finally, thanks to all of you who have contributed SO generously to make this program a reality. We truly would not be here without you.

With warm regards and deep appreciation,
Elise

Welcome

Dear Friends,

Our Fellows are embarking on an incredible, intense, complicated, meaningful experience in Jerusalem in March 2022.  We’ve created this section for you to “travel” with them, get to see Jerusalem through their eyes, learn about their process and their encounters with Jerusalemites from diverse backgrounds.

Please enjoy following our Fellows on their “adventures” in Jerusalem.  They will be posting from time to time as will our Host Organizations, participants and our team.

Let us know what you think!
